MEET JUSTIN UTLEY

I was introduced to Justin Utley through a friend. Not in person but via our close friend the World Wide Web. He forwarded me Justin’s YouTube clips and I thought not only is he talented but sexy, too! I’m looking forward to music from his sophomore album Nothing This Real and will review when I have it in my ears.

MADONNA CAUSES COMMOTION IN 2012

CAUSING A COMMOTION

MADONNA STILL ROCKS THE UNIVERSE

I’m a “True Blue” fan of Madonna, I am. From her not-so humble beginnings of telling Dick Clark on American Bandstand that she wanted to “rule the world” through her popular music, trendsetting and choices in men, I’ve known Madonna well. Now… she has no clue of who I am but I’ve seen the best of her and her at her worst. Many of us have. Regardless of what she does, people, especially gay men, have an opinion because more times than not she is, as she sings Causing a Commotion.

Madonna is a rule breaker and also someone who finds the rules comforting to be contained in. Let’s start at the beginning of my love affair with Madonna, pre-British accent but post-arrival to New York desperate for fame without means other than drive to get her there. After getting signed to her first record deal in 1982, the media, legions of fans and critics never grew weary of speculating what the “Material Girl” would do next. It was on this first album that brought us the deliciously teasing Lucky Star and celebratory Holiday.

MADONNA’S GREATEST PERFORMANCES!

Her appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards where she sang her scandalous chart-topper “Like a Virgin” quickly went down in MTV history as one of the most iconic performances ever. However, it was her book Sex that really gave people something to discuss. Fierce pornographic imagery of Madonna being masturbated by Wesley Snipes and Naomi Campbell, holding the late Joey Stefano at the Gaiety Theatre in NYC on a leash, and graphic fantasy displayed through poems and explicitness. She has always made sure people talk about her no matter what the price of shock value is in the going market.

Then came movies like Desperately Seeking Susan, Dick Tracy and Evita, to name a few. Her acting has been both revered and often panned but she unapologetically continues her path into entertainment history as a trailblazer and pioneer showing the world exactly what one woman can accomplish. Her latest film W.E. has gotten good buzz and attention for her direction. Madonna has proven time and time again that there’s nothing she cannot do.

Favorite memories of me and Madge: In 2000, I stood at the Black Party in Manhattan feeling my Ecstasy in hopes that because the DJ was playing the anthem hand-waver “Frozen,” Madonna would be descending from the ceiling of Roseland Ballroom. Everyone stood on the dance floor looking up at the mirror ball waiting. She never showed. I also happily attended her Sticky & Sweet Tour in 2008 in San Francisco with my friend Mikel where we could almost smell her in our second-row seats. We were very close to Madge, and she us.

MADONNA CREATES HALFTIME MAGIC AT SUPER BOWL 2012

I could continue on talking about how Madonna has influenced me or made we wonder what she was thinking at times, but I digress. Madame Ciccone’s recent performance during halftime at Super Bowl XLVI brought in an extra 3 million viewers who tuned into see her. Anticipation grew over time through carefully crafted promos and appearances. Plus, people knew that it would be grand in scale. Hello, it’s the Super Bowl. The fierce commercials, the beefy men bending over being grabbed by another at the waist, and something about touching down somewhere.

To feel passionate about something is to also have just cause to be honest with your true feelings about it even if it’s against the grain. If you didn’t care, you wouldn’t. I must admit that I feel the Madonna that we’ve seen in the last few years has found a niche of following the trend of what’s happening now to be current, which is fine. But I can’t say that I think her later musical catalogue can compare to her best work prior. The newest single “Give Me All Your Luvin’” is catchy, yes. But hardly groundbreaking like Ray of Light and the gorgeously creeping Rain.

During the Super Bowl performance, light panels filled the field and stage. Madonna entered in Roman drag with hunky Gods in sandals and drapes carrying her out like the queen she knows she is. It was her crowd and she owned every minute, even though the fierce Vogue opening was quite reminiscent of Kylie Minogue’s Aphrodite tour. In my opinion, Madonna was both lip-syncing and singing over her tracks live. She knows giving her audience what they want is smarter than risking the chance of a vocal malfunction. Overall it was a huge success! Low-point: Seeing our icon with one gold pompom in her hand three minutes too long. Highlight: Our queen at a career pinnacle looking amazing and delivering. L-U-V, Madonna!

WHITNEY HOUSTON RESTS IN PEACE

She came from very humble beginnings to become one of the biggest names and legends in music and film. Whitney Houston has unexpectedly died at the age of 48 years. It hasn’t been released the cause of death but unfortunately like many, Houston had a long going battle with drugs that eventually destroyed her voice and career. Sadly, the expectation is that it possibly played into her demise. What a talent she was! Whitney’s iconic music will transcend time.

ALL OF WHITNEY’S GREATEST HITS!

Includes “The Greatest Love” and “When You Believe”

Luckily I was able to see Whitney live in concert circa ’87-’88 with friends Gena and Bifford in Nashville. Sorry to admit but she wasn’t amazing that night performance-wise. Her voice was fabulous but her moves were awkward. She never seemed like she was a natural dancer or handled choreography well. Her strong voice that resonated with fans and listeners will continue on forever. I’m sorry to say we’ll never hear that fierce Whitney that once ruled, again. I’m glad I can say I saw the lady in person.

The battles she fought with drug addiction and self-destructive demons carried on through the years and we, her fans, saw her unravel through the media’s display. I will remember the diva herself for the beautiful music she shared with us, her talents and soul. Her battle is now over and she may rest in peace. Thank You, Whitney. We will always love you!

THE ULTIMATE MUSIC FOR 2012

It’s New Year’s Eve and you have nothing to play! On your Apple iPod Touch, that it. What music will rock you into the new year and better yet, tonight?! The day is still young and there’s work to be done here in 2011 so get this going and enjoy the rest of your day (he said to himself aloud.) These tunes have been the ultimate music in the ears of listeners in 2011 and like any great music, it will be delivering for years to come. Let’s get playing!

One of the hardest working gals in the music industry today is Rihanna. I secretly love everything she does but encourage her to take a break before she burns out. Loud by Rihanna has more singles than I can count at time of publish of this post so guarantee the album is fierce! But know the singles you may not know now will soon, too, be radio chart toppers. Go Girl! “I like it, like it. C’mon.”

To be a Follower (capitalize that in honor of thee) is to also know good and well that I love them girls from the UK that have been turning it out for years without much America impact. Well, they are here or soon will be! Learn them! Love them. My girls have delivered an amazing new album with On Your Radar by The Saturdays. Being privy to media love on occasion I have already learned the entire album and worship it. Can’t wait for Frankie, Molly, Vanessa, Rochelle (congrats on the engagement!) and Una (good luck with the new baby!) become household names in the US. Crossing fingers, and the pond. “And the whispers behind the frowns say ‘Girl, that ain’t pretty.’”

So, Miss Nicki Minaj is a lot of things to take at once but the main thing is that one should get used to her because she’s around for a while. Her style, wacko. He nerve, strong. Her talent, prominent. Her music, all over. Her best is here with Pink Friday [Deluxe Edition] by Nicki Minaj. If you’re a fan of Will.i.Am and THE E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies) by the Black Eyed Peas (another smash invasion of the hit singles) then you’ll want this! Trust. Another group that isn’t going very far anytime soon. “I like that Boom Boom Pow! I’m so 3008. You’re so 2000 and late.”

When musical groups become successful one or tow of them often feel they can branch out into their own foray as a solo artist. But when you’re as big, meaning number of members, as the Pussycat Dolls then after the spotlight begins to shift solo projects begin to sprout quite quickly. We have seen it finally work for Nicole Sherzinger after a few good efforts. Now we have Show Me by Jessica Sutta, the latest kitty purring her way onto the singles charts. Once you hear it, you’ll love it. “Words, words, all they are is stupid poetry in verse.”

And one for the road… the winners of the UK version of The X Factor are a girl group (yes, me and my girlies!) and from what I’ve heard, they sound really good together. Looking forward to hearing more from these new divas. Check out Cannonball by Little Mix and tell me what you think. And while you’re at taking this new sound, hear Video Games by Lana Del Rey. Fabulously haunting, romantically eerie and quite different than anything you’ve ever heard. Hear it.

Happy 2012!!! xoSM

DANCING ON MY OWN

I recently had the sweet luck of scoring a coveted media pass to the White Party here in Palm Springs. Fortunately I was able to enjoy the gay festivities without paying the exorbitant ticket prices to go many places that were at any other time free admittance. So when the generous offer came across my iPhone on that Thursday, I cleared a few things to attend the parties that weekend because I originally had no intention on going.

The boys were out in full force wearing flip-flops over perfectly manicure feet with board shorts on many a Muscle Mary and skimpy white Speedos on the Twink Brigade. The cooler weather that Mother Nature bestowed upon the Coachella Valley during the events had many questioning the attendance since sunshine wasn’t in the immediate future. Never fear since at every glance and glare there were nearly naked nellies on platforms dancing, laying on each other making out on lounge chairs and cruising one another in the Renaissance Hotel lobby on Friday when I picked up my pass.

In the chaotic process, I met Charo who was taking photos with fans and saw where the NOH8 Campaign was in full force with Adam Bouska shooting his photographic art for equality. Charo turned to me as I was turning to go and it was like we knew each other already. We immediately kissed both cheeks, held hands and commented on how cold it was. Well, she was dressed in a paper-thin beaded gown covering her petite frame. She looked amazing! Very charming and exactly what you’d expect. Fiercely present in the moment.

That evening there was the Boxers or Briefs Boot Camp Party at the hotel which I skipped and an after-hours party that I sweetly slept through. I work fulltime and need some rest. Please. On Saturday, the official Spring Break Pool Party was in high attendance at the Renaissance Hotel while competition at the ACE Hotel across town hosted Muscle Bears and inked studs with buzzed heads and nipple rings. The average age of White Party attendees is closer to 25 than 45 so if young boys who could use some good eating over sweaty dancing attract you, sign up now and grab the decent weekend package prices early!

At the Renaissance on Saturday there were entertainers with back-up dancers and Party Poodles behind designer sunglasses dancing on one another. For being my town, I really only knew three people at this party. I was surprised. But, it was only a taste of things to come. I literally spoke to no one and in return, no one spoke to me. It was like I had gotten inside but was still looking in from the outside. Some kid thought I was Security. It was definitely a eye-opening experience. I don’t want it to sound like I’m a victim because obviously I am not. But the circuit can be a very lonely place if you are attending single. Everyone was in groups and they were tight. I don’t sugarcoat things so I’m telling you like it is.

Saturday evening was the big event the White Party and was held at the Palm Springs Convention Center. I took a nap after dinner because I haven’t gone out dancing in quite a while and needed some steam to stay out. Unfortunately I was only provided access to one pass so my husband stayed home, again. Dressed in a white Versace shirt with gold Medusa buttons and sexy jeans and motorcycle boots, I was ready to tear up the dance floor.

I arrived around 11 p.m. and strutted up to the door with a great attitude to go and my fully-charge iPhone to chat my buddy Jack Ryan up during lulls in the evening. And for those alone moments I didn’t want to spend alone. When I walked in, porn directrix and DJ Chi Chi LaRue was spinning the entire Britney Spears and Lady Gaga catalogue for her followers and shirtless sweaty sexy boys were winding through the corridors and doorways to the heavy bass penetrating from within the main room. As I entered the room I was transported to every circuit party I’ve ever been to. The thrill of the unknown and the comfort of the predictable gave me that feeling.

My spots on the dance floor are always near the outskirts and corners. It’s where I have always planted myself. I can’t stand being in the middle of the hoards. One plus about going alone, I was able to walk away at anytime, change places in the room and not have to answer to one person. Control freak, that’s me. I ran into a handful of people I knew but at the same time admittedly wasn’t looking for anyone in particular. Swedish pop sensation Robyn was headlining and entertained the crowds around 2:15 a.m. while random performances from the Las Vegas production of Zumanity hit the stage.

I jumped over to the Tea Dance right after dark on Sunday. Again, I was in the mood for some dancing figuring I’d see many more people I knew from the gym since it has been the event the locals attend every year over the other choices. By the time I arrived, of course, the kids had been going all weekend and were sloppy and somehow found themselves bumping into me when I wasn’t near anyone. “Come down, girl. Find a map,” I told one of them. No judgment from this soapbox since I have in fact been there behind blown pupils, rolling eyes and grinding teeth. But it is quite a different scene sober.

After some good dancing to the rocking Freemasons while positioned in various open spaces underneath the clear starry sky, I still didn’t see many people I knew. Dance recording artist Alexis Jordan sang her three smash hits and I decided that since there was no line at the Ferris Wheel it was a perfect time to catch a ride before the fireworks.

I walked up to the gate and stuck one finger up smiling. Translation: I want to ride and yes, I’m alone. The guy shook his head no and said I needed someone else because he couldn’t let only one rider get in. At first, I thought I misunderstood him. But no. I mentioned something like “After all the money I paid?! This is bullshit!” Which it was. (He didn’t need to know I’m a brilliant writer who didn’t and shouldn’t pay.) Luckily, the fireworks started and caught my attention with something loud and sparkly because I was about to snap on his ass. The fireworks were spectacular! I suppose that’s where most of the $130 ticket prices went towards since drinks were $12 by Belvedere which I’m sure was underwritten by the vodka company since their logo was splashed everywhere all weekend. I paid $20 to get a double-shot in my juice on Saturday and when the girl asked if I wanted more juice, I replied, “Um, no.”

Personal feelings aside (as the devil and angel sitting on my shoulders duke it out), party promoter Jeffrey Sanker delivers the elaborate yearly production to the hungry and desperate masses while charging a small fortune to attend and making one in the process. The annual event comes to town every April and always brings with it great revenue to our city and much-needed boost of energy to our often-quiet desert town.

However, there’s a word that has become synonymous with Sanker’s name and it’s not tweed. History speaks for itself, and I only report what I see and observe when able. I encourage everyone to attend it at least once so you can make your own judgment call and will perhaps find it overwhelmingly fantastic and desperate to return next year. But, if you make plans to come, make plans to spend money. At the end of the day, I can’t help but wonder how much is too much?! And further more, I know it takes money to put this event on but what exactly are you getting for your money and who exactly benefits?!
