ULTIMATE GRAND SUPREME – ALYSSA EDWARDS

Alyssa Edwards

When the new cast for RuPaul’s Drag Race was announced I knew it would be one crazy ride! There were plenty of hungry newcomers dressed in heels I had never heard of but there were a few seasoned professionals who I knew would bring the noise. I was right! Front and center is pageant puss Alyssa Edwards showing how and why she has made such an impact in the competition world of pageantry. When queens walk the walk, they should talk the talk. Madame Edwards does just that as I interview her in-between gigs.

When it comes to getting the true Tea from the sources themselves, no one helps out like All Starr Management! My dears Natasha and Bob get me in and provide the means for these special Dolls of RuPaul to share their sordid stories and express themselves as only queens can. Well, hell… let me allow Alyssa the time to tell it like it is! When she talks we definitely listen. And remember, “It’s not personal, it’s drag.”

Alyssa Edwards

Steven Michael  - Great meeting you in L.A. recently with Bob Taylor at Micky’s during the featuring of RuPaul’s Drag Race girls from season 5. Love seeing you Dolls go at it on Drag Race. It’s a real fun season because of you seasoned pros. I’m hoping you’ll take a few minutes, let your hair down and answer some questions for your super supportive fans! Tell it all… No Tea.

Girl, we have a lot in common. I’m a choreographer and grew up dancing the workshops and competitive dance competitions like Tremaine and Showstopper. I’m guessing you did, too! Tell us about your dance background and how your passion plays into Alyssa’s performances.

Alyssa Edwards

Alyssa Edwards – “I stepped my first foot onstage at the age of 9-years-old (I believe). The one thing I remember most at the conclusion of my first group dance was: This Is WHAT and Who I AM destined to do and be. My love for the stage grew intense as studying, performing and competing were my happiest and most memorable moments of my childhood. I realized a few short years later dance would become more than just my passion but my first love and life.”

“I won my first student choreography award at the age of 16 and began student assisting thereafter. I opened Beyond Belief Dance Company which only existed in my most fascinating dreams. A dance space where students could unite and express themselves through the art of movement. By mere trick of fate and with the help of a few of my students’ parents this dream became reality in 2004. I am living my passion as an educator mentoring the youth of today and the future of tomorrow, a choreographer and artistic company director.”

“Upon discovering the art form of female impersonation I found myself very intrigued. I loved playing dress up with my four sisters and entertaining a large crowd was my addiction. Alyssa’s performances are built around just that… ‘Getting My Life’ every time I take to the stage! My dance training and arts background has been my foundation for many of my talent productions and gigs! I am blessed with the gift of dance and creativity which I will forever be thankful.”

Shangela - Alyssa Edwards

You’ve mentioned putting Shangela in drag for her first time. Who put you in drag for the first time and who have been your inspirations? I believe you’re a bit old school like myself.

“Growing up with several women, as a ladyboy I loved to play in the cosmetics! As I grew older I found an interest for makeup. I put myself in somewhat drag and pranced on into the club feeling extra fishy and ultra glam! I look back at those pics and just smile. A dear friend of mine Alan McCune assisted me in the cultivating of my drag beginning. He was a fantastic makeup artist and believed in my potential. It was Alan who introduced me to Laken Edwards who would take me under her wing as one of my drag mothers. Laken was a successful pageant queen with a skilled etiquette of style and carriage.”

“I terrorized the town as a young gay boy playing dress up turning out the amateur shows. I met another individual who would play a key role in the building of my character. Whitney ‘The Eyes of Texas’ Paige. Along with Laken, my drag daddy Mark and my grandmother Miss Manny, I had acquired the ultimate gay family to mentor me! My biggest inspirations are the style of Joan Collins, the grace of Ginger Rogers and the presence of Linda Evangelista!”

Alyssa Edwards

My dear “Mister Sister” Kimbol Purkerson always told me that you and I reminded him of each other. I competed against Tandi Andrews at Miss Gay USA decades ago. She of course won and I most definitely did not. Care to share your pageant resume? I know you’ve had a few moments that have gone down in drag history. Anything you’d care to share in your very own words or want to clear up?

“Living in the south, drag is BIG, glamorous and to make it one must be top notch! Pageantry is borderline a must to get your act noticed! My very first newcomer pageant was an epic fail during crowning. However, that showing gained me some recognition. People enjoyed my talent and saw the potential. I competed the following year to win that big hat and received my first gig as a member of the up and coming elite Edna Angels show cast. I went on to achieve numerous titles as I was addicted to pageantry and competition. Each experience was an invaluable piece to my puzzle.”

I am a former:
Miss Texas America
Miss Texas Continental
Miss Texas FFI
Miss Gay USofA
Miss All American Goddess

“I achieved a long term goal after five attempts placing 2nd-alternate and 3rd-alternate twice as Miss Gay America. This was a dream of mine that was very near and dear to my heart. This journey was a hallmark of my life and career however it was not my destiny. I was crowned October 31, 2010 and released of my duties Jan. 1, 2011 due to ‘Conduct unbecoming of a Miss Gay America.’ In every working relationship there are kinks that require adjusting but in this situation I simply was not a good fit. Our differences as adults and the decision to relinquish my title never changed my respect for the leader and creator of the wonderful world of drag pageantry.”

Alyssa Edwards

I know with your contract at RDR you can’t allow much regarding the show but what did you find as the hardest part of filming the show?

“This experience as whole in a nutshell challenges and pushes one to the extreme outer box! Rewarding in so many ways to see the potential meeting a new level. Difficult, intense but most of and above all memorable. One of the greatest paths I have been fortunate to walk. I can say I DID IT!”

Out of past seasons, if you were paired up with someone like the Dolls were in RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars who would you want to team up with and why?

“DUH! The One and The Only… Shangela Laquifa Wadley! Not only are we colleagues, friends, fellow entertainers but we are family! We are the dynamic duo full of Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve and most importantly in my eyes TALENT! Always keeping it real and having a great time at it! We both know our strengths and have learned to embrace our weaknesses. The Sequel Baby!”

Alyssa Edwards

What do you think the casting agents saw in your video audition that caught their eye in wanting to see more from you? Any advice for young squirrels wanting to get on the show? Had you applied before season 5?

“In the casting process it’s most crucial to simply be ‘Who You Are!’ Your uniqueness is what’s desirable. Stand out amongst a crowd and deliver your character in a matter of minutes. Keep it real, be sassy, be funny, take it up and reel it in… It’s ALL about you! Whether right, wrong or indifferent, believe in your ability and potential. I had auditioned prior before finally truly being myself on my audition tape! Never give up and remember it’s free to audition. Get on that tape! I believe the casting agents recognized what I recognize about myself: My confidence, my flaws, my talent, my characteristic traits and most definitely my C.U.N.T! My advice: Don’t Dream It… Be It”

Alyssa Edwards

You’ve been on the pageant side of things in the drag industry for years and now you’re having a surge in popularity because of the show regarding bookings, fees and exposure. The opportunity really is priceless. Have you come across any of your sisters in the community that have changed their ways towards you either wearing green on their sleeves of envy or bouts of cattiness? How do you handle the haters?

“RuPaul’s Drag Race has Ru-volutionized the drag industry. Ru has taken this somewhat underground scene and has made an exciting mainstream extravaganza! It’s like watching the largest pageant from the viewing of your own home every Monday night… I live the House Down Pumps!”

“I don’t reward nor entertain negative naysayers. Debbie Downers, Bitter Betty’s and Negative Nancy’s are UNINVITED to the Party! And I thank you all.” (laughs)

Alyssa Edwards

What are you doing on your time off? How do you let your hair down, when and where?

“I am a busy gal, and I wouldn’t have it any other way! In my spare time I love a good scary movie or chick flick! I also enjoy low-key nights with close friends chillaxing! I am a very sweat pants, t-shirts kinda guy.”

Who keeps you grounded? Have you found that people are trying to be all in your world that served crickets before? I figure people would be coming out of the woodworks pining for your attention.

“The beauty of life keeps me grounded. I am blessed to have these opportunities and I remind myself quite often. My studio kids take me to a place that gives me hope and drag inspires me in a million ways. All the world is a stage and I am humbled I am living my life on one of the worlds largest.”

Alyssa Edwards

Watching yourself on Logo TV, have you been overall happy with how you’ve been portrayed? Were you nervous going into production?

“I have learned in life, and this experience has aided me in laughing at myself and not being such a critic. It is very hard to truly get to know who I am and what I am about in this televised competition, other than I am highly competitive. I have enjoyed giggling at my ridiculous nonsense as it’s all in fun! Life is too short to not savor these moments that are sometimes a once in a lifetime.”

Alyssa Edwards

The most recent episode of Untucked, which I always say is where the real story is, gave us a battle of wits and wisdom vs. youthful ridiculousness. You seasoned vets shredded Miss Cha Cha. It continued on and on. So… she was getting on your nerves, huh?!

“So basically you are implying the old vs. the new! (smiles) She actually was not getting on my nerves too much, it was just an intense situation. We had been working together all day and it had been a long day of work! Miss Cha Cha is quite the talented and quick witted young entertainer with a well-lit road ahead. When you get a bunch of fabulous queens in one room after many hours of fierce drag, alcoholic beverages and opinions, it can get out of control! We all were about to pull each others eyelashes off!”

Would RuPaul come and visit you girls like Tyra Banks would on America’s Next Top Model or were you locked away from everyone and everything? What did you find yourself doing when you weren’t ruining drag in giant aquariums or cruising the underwear-clad Pit Crew?

“In my moments of ‘Me’ time throughout this experience I found myself journaling about my existence. I believe our book of life is already written and the story is now being read aloud.”

Alyssa Edwards

And finally… What’s the song YOU would choose to lip-sync for your life if given the choice?

“The one song if I could chose to lip- sync would be my theme song…. ‘The Glamorous Life’!”

“Always and Forever, Alyssa Edwards.”

THANKS MY LADY! Looking forward to having our readers find out more about you! Best of luck with the rest of the season of RDR and look forward to seeing you again soon. Stay in touch if you make it to Palm Springs and we’ll have you over for a home-cooked meal and cocktail. XO

COCO MONTRESE – GIRL ON FIRE

Coco Montrese

Thanks to my good friends at All Starr Management I was able to catch up and interview RuPaul’s Drag Race breakout star and Las Vegas celebrity headliner Coco Montrese for a few personal thoughts on her new level of superstardom, what filming reality television is really like and maybe a bit more insight about the brouhaha between her and fellow contender Alyssa Edwards. I’ve interviewed many of the most popular girls from the RDR here at iamstevenmichael.com and am grateful for each one for their time and trust in what I’m doing.

I know Coco on a personal level even though distance and scheduling is often not our friend. We’ve been to see her in Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas at The Quad Resort and Casino twice and had planned on connecting during Christmas but the weather was too chilly for a delicate showgirl like Coco. We quickly forgave and catch up via text every so often. I’m thrilled to see her on Logo TV and know this is just a hint of great things to come for Ms. Montrese! Look for her coming soon to a city near you for her amazing impersonations and lip-sync realness! For now, I present the diva of Las Vegas turned hot reality star Coco Montrese.

Coco Montrese

Steven Michael – Coco, this conversation has been a long time coming, my love. Let’s start our engines… I know you’re busting a move between Las Vegas, appearing as a Season 5 Doll on RuPaul’s Drag Race in various cities and we hope to find out where and what else. When you’re able, how do you relax and describe the moment.

Coco Montrese - “Sometimes home with my puppies and my husband just laying on the couch watching Netflix. (laughs) Or out with my friends at a movie or bowling, hitting the great lounges at the hotels on The Strip. I’m not really in clubs much because I work in them so I don’t visit them often when I’m off work.”

I always ask this but each response is different. What’s the biggest misconception about filming reality TV?

“That it’s scripted. I can truly say it’s not scripted. It’s real, in this case of RDR for sure.”

Coco Montrese

What did you find yourself doing in between filming? I understand you’re considerably sequestered alone away from life. How lonely did you become, if at all?

“Very lonely! You spend a lot of time alone and you have a lot of time to think about life and I think that makes your emotions heighten.”

I bet emotions do run high. Type-A personalities thrown together then separated to sort it all out alone. The back together. We are routing for a few of you Ladykins this season on RDR5. Who were you genuinely excited to see when you walked in?

“Roxxxy Andrews. We’ve been friends for years and had not seen each other in ages!”

Roxxxy is doing very well! Are you happy with how you’ve been portrayed on television? Girl, you are in your eyes!

“Yes!!! I am very happy so far. It’s me and I’m real. Some people aren’t going to like someone who is real and faces issues head on. I live my life by its motto, ‘Don’t do anything to someone you don’t want done to yourself.’ I have no problem with letting someone know if I have an issue with them. I will tell them before I go tell someone else about them. I just like to keep it honest and upfront.”

Divas Las Vegas

Girl, trust. Would love to get into the “Coco-Alyssa Brouhaha” but with it being earlier on in the season I assume you can’t allow much due to confidentiality clauses. But… Girl, tell us the Tea. Well, pour what you can.

“You’ll have to watch that all unfold on the show!”

And many of us caught that last episode! Girl, emotions. Can you share your experience becoming Miss Gay America? Had you entered a number of times paying dues beforehand or in other systems? And what advice could you give to queens wanting to become Miss Gay America?

“I entered Miss Gay America three times in a row before I was crowned. My advice to anyone who wants to become Miss Gay America is to make sure you know what it requires and be willing to complete those task given. It’s a great responsibility and just because you are a great competitor and can win the real question is, can you reign? To win feels so good but to reign successful is how you leave your mark on the pageant industry and the world.”

Coco Montrese

I love it! The question “Can you reign?” can be interpreted many ways. I appreciate that. It’s no secret that I worship Las Vegas. If we weren’t here in Palm Springs, we’d be there. Do you love truly Sin City and does it ever become too much? It’s such a late night scene there and there are always crowds! Can it be a tough environment to stay focused and on track?

“I absolutely love LAS VEGAS! I wish I had moved here much sooner but this worked out perfect in my career at this time. I love the night life here and the day life it’s all so exciting. There’s so many people from all over the world that you just can’t get enough of this town.”

What’s happening at the new Quad Resort and Casino, former home to Imperial Palace? Is it chaos with construction and are you getting a new showroom? I loved Imperial Palace as a child. The awe of the Oriental flair. Of course this was during the days of the fabulous Dunes, Caesar’s Palace blue illumination and you could walk from the corner of MGM Grand now Bally’s straight across the street to Caesar’s moving walkway. Pre-Mirage decade of grand facade.

“The Quad Resort is taking shape right before our very eyes and it is so cool to watch it happen. DIVAS is in the same showroom which is also going through many changes for the good and the show is going stronger than ever while performing to sold out audiences and presenting new characters nightly. You never know what celebrities you’re going to see at DIVAS on and off stage!”

Coco Montrese

Yes! Last trip we were there Manila Luzon almost ran me over coming out of the bathroom. It threw me because it was actually the men’s room. What is the biggest misconception about Frank Marino? And about being a showgirl on The Strip?

“Many don’t know that Frank Marino is a wonderful man to work for with a lot of history on the Las Vegas Strip celebrating 28 years on The Strip. Many don’t know that he is a down to earth person with just as many jokes backstage as he does on stage. Biggest misconception about being a showgirl on The Strip is that you are always a DIVA. I love my sweatpants, my baseball cap, the basketball court and gym. It’s not always feathers and boas and jewels!” (giggles)

Coco Montrese

Where on The Strip do you find yourself spending time off? Any secret hotspots or fabulous hangouts we should know about?

“The Cosmopolitan Chandelier Bar, Grand Lux Palazzo and of course the Sugar Factory at Paris. My favorite spots! They know me by name at these establishments.”

Well, obviously Coco. You are a DIVA! We worship The Chandelier Bar at The Cosmopolitan. Missed ice skating there with you there at the resort last trip during Christmas. Do you have any advice to entertainers who want to submit their audition tape to RuPaul’s Drag Race? What did you do on your tape that caught the casting agents’ eyes?

“All I can say is be yourself. If you are trying to fit a mold of what someone else thinks you should be then you shouldn’t send in an audition tape. They are looking for YOU and if you can be just you then you got to find you first.”

Coco Montrese

Wisdom, gal. When are you the most comfortable, on stage in full drag under the spotlight with worshipers a’ plenty or out of gig around people who aren’t really affected by your superstardom?

“I’m kind of comfortable in both. I love life on stage and would probably die if I had to go without it. But I also enjoy my friends who don’t really even care to know the celebrity side of my life.”

I’ve tasted moments of the spotlight myself and continue to chase it in various capacities. I know where you come from. Describe the feeling when you see that Joel McHale has you featured on The Soup and strangers upload viral videos based on your time and performances on RuPaul’s Drag Race? It must be completely surreal…

“It was really weird, because I watch his show all the time and then to see yourself on it was one of those ‘fall out of your chair moments.’ Definitely created a smile from one end to the other for sure.”

How do you deal with the haters and have you come across many from being on the show? Always remember my love, “If there were no haters, there would be no lovers.”

“It’s national television and everyone isn’t gonna like you. So you’ll have haters and that’s totally OK. If you say my name anything you say after it is OK with me. You thought enough of me to say my name and that’s all I need in this wonderful world of social media!”

And finally, anything you want to say to your fans? Your precious “Marsh-Mellows.”

“Never give up on your dreams and know it’s OK to dream but it’s even better to work at making those dreams come true!”

THANKS MY DELICIOUS COCO! You’re one in a million! See you on The Strip next trip… Save us seats. Follow Coco Montrese on Facebook and Twitter.

JADE JOLIE – SUPERSTAR IN THE MAKING

Jade Jolie

Jade Jolie. Just seeing or saying the words conjures images of ultimate glamour and sheer grandness. I’ve had this wonderful interview with Jade sitting patiently in my MacBook but wanted to hold off until the season premiere of Drag Race to publish it at the request of her team. I just got the OK and here we are with my first interview from the season five Dolls of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Since she was in L.A. for the premiere party at The Abbey, I finally met Ms. Jolie at Micky’s in West Hollywood the evening before while she and cast mates from Logo TV smash series RDR entertained the mass crowds that packed the house.

I was in town working at Joe Blasco’s in Hollywood on my Creative Costume for Mr. All American Gent 2013 and decided to stay the evening at the Ramada WeHo since my bestie Bob Taylor was also in town with Latrice Royale and faithful crew representing All Star Management. Plus with a swing through the Fabric/Garment Districts my schedule was complete. The Ramada has redone their rooms and I was quite thankful because they needed some serious attention. So glad I stayed there since that’s where the group of queens were and it’s so convenient to everything. I even had a moment to get a great workout at the newly remodeled 24 Hour Fitness across the street which was fierce and ran into the dear Chi Chi LaRue at Starbucks early the next morning before I checked out. It had been a hot minute since I’d seen him and he looked great.

Jade Jolie

Jade Jolie is one of the fabulous new squirrels on the drag block and was just so charming in person. Quite a sweetheart. Like I mentioned, Micky’s was so packed we couldn’t even get to the stage to tip the girls so we hung towards the back with the likes of former RDR Dolls: Manila, Raja, Carmen and Mimi Imfurst. The energy was busting and bustling throughout the club. We had a great time! Anytime I spend precious moments with Bob is great for me regardless if we’re curled up in sweats on the couch or tittying to the hottest clubs dressed to the nines. I enjoyed seeing him in enjoying himself in his element. Everyone was having a great time.

The show moved along swiftly by the help of hostess emcee Raven and her harem of misfits including Morgan McMichaels, Alaska Thunderfuck, Latrice Royale, Coco Montrese, Alyssa Edwards, Jade and Honey Mahogany to mention a few. The crowd also found season five finalist Roxxxy Andrews and superstar Shangela mingling amongst their fans. Bob said that the next evening at the premiere party at The Abbey fans were coming up to Latrice and breaking into tears from joy. He mingled with Mike Ruiz, Michelle Visage, Camille Grammar and RuPaul himself while I drove Stella Stang back safely into the desert after a pass through Krispy Kreme at Ontario Mills. Honestly, one of the best times I’ve ever had in Los Angeles!

RuPaul's Drag Race Season V

We are so looking forward to seeing the new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race while rooting Jade on week after week. I’m expecting great things from this up and coming goddess, so learn who she is and what her Tea is all about. Here she is in her own words letting us take a glimpse at who Jade Jolie really is. This interview was a fun one! Luckily because I’m connected in the right places I’m paddling the media canoe delivering the hottest celebrity dish and detail before many others. Meet the bubbly effervescence of Jade Jolie…

Steven Michael – Hey Mamma! I know things are about to blow up for you so let me introduce you to your fans and followers in a few ways they maybe don’t know you already. It was fierce meeting you at Micky’s. I wish we had grabbed a snapshot. Where did you begin this crazy career in drag?

Jade Jolie – “I started at the Metro in Jacksonville, FL. I would religiously come back to perform or compete regardless if I won or loss every week when I lived just 1 1/2 hours away. I have to say I’ve never been as determined with anything as I have been with drag in my life!”

Jade Jolie

It shows! It really does. You’ve come along way, baby girl. What or who are your inspirations?

“My biggest inspiration growing up was the Spice Girls. They appealed to every side of my colorful personality! I lived for everything about them Their lives seemed so colorfully happy and drag fabulous!”

Jade Jolie

I do love them, too! I worship Spice World when Posh Beckham is asking about the “little black Gucci dress or the other little black Gucci dress.” So vapid and perfect. Do you consider yourself a drag queen or female impersonator and what’s the difference?

“To me they’ve seemed the same. I am a drag queen, female impersonator, part-time woman, beautiful clown, ladyboy, femme Manwich sandwich. (giggles) You choose.”

You made me laugh out loud. What’s the biggest misconception about shooting reality TV? And biggest misconception about Jade Jolie?

“I know you hear this all the time but until you actually go through the experience I don’t think spectators realize the work and hours that go into a day. It was exhausting but I wouldn’t have given up the experience for anything in the world. As far as myself I always seem to be underestimated. Maybe it’s this fishy face? But you never know what I can produce and will never stop trying to up my own game and continuing to grow as a entertainer and person.”

Jade Jolie

Are you nervous watching yourself on TV? Did you find yourself acting differently when the camera was filming you?

“It’s a mix of nerves and excitement! There were so many things to focus on as far as challenges and getting things done eventually the cameras faded away.”

I know you have very strict contract confidentiality clauses but anything you can share about the upcoming season?

Drag Race is our Gay Olympics. I would never want to spoil the surprises to come! You just have to tune in and watch.” (giggles)

RuPaul's Drag Race V

Bah-humbug! What do you think it was about your audition tape that attracted the casting agents to you? There must have been something you did that made it all pop for them because I bet they get a lot of tapes to sleuth through.

“I’m sure being a fishy and pretty queen didn’t hurt. (laughs) But honestly I tried to really let loose and just be myself in my tape as if I was kiki’ing in my house. I’m a lil’ off and I’ll be the first to admit it but I think it’s our differences which makes us shine. Luckily me being my vibrant self caught there eye!”

Jade Jolie

I worship. Who has been your favorite Doll from previous seasons?

“Jujubee – Hands down. I love her sense of humor and style. She also is one of the few RuPaul girls I had the privilege to actually meet before the show and she’s even more sweet, humble and genuine in person.”

Jade Jolie

When Jujubee was on during All Stars I really thought that she really came out guns blazing and did a great job! She shined more that round than during her first season, for me. It was a hard top group of Dolls to compete against during All Stars. Being on the show and given the fact you’re working more because of that has to really polish off the girls as seasoned performers. Being on RuPaul’s Drag Race is one hell of an opportunity for queens. As Latrice said, “It’s is life changing.” Are you ready for fame? To be recognized from TV? How will you stay grounded?

“It’s so surreal. I count my blessings everyday and although I’ve worked so hard to get here, it’s still a dream. I’m so thankful for RuPaul seeing something special in me. Fame is just a word. I will always be the same person and never forget what I’ve been through and who’s been with me on the way.” (smiles)

Jade Jolie

How important is a drag family? Describe yours…

“I never knew how special a drag family was honestly until the recent years past. The best way I can describe mine is loyal and honest, which is key to me to even be my friend let alone be family and mine truly has. Once people have a perception of you they tend to feed you what you want to hear and family will set you straight – Tough Love Style.” (laughs)

What did you find yourself doing on days off from filming and were you locked
away deep in Hollywood?

“Pure Hibernation. Sleep never seemed so special!” (giggles)

I can imagine! Jade Jolie. Where did your name come from?

“Jade originated from my still very active gamer side playing Mortal Kombat. Jade was a character that was particularly fabulous with the best bod and tits so I was like I have to be her. Jolie is from Angelina Jolie who to me is the Queens of all Queens.”

Jade Jolie

Yes she is. Love her Lara Croft movies. Mamma is badass! And finally, describe your “Dream Cast.” Who’s there and what’s the opening production?

“Hmm… Probably Jujubee, Coco Montrese, Jinkx Monsoon and Vivienne Pinay so we can all do the ‘Spice Up Your Life’ production at the end of the SpiceWorld.” (giggles continually)

Wasn’t she just delightful?! I want to spend more time with her and guess I will be every Monday night during RuPaul’s Drag Race 9/8c on Logo TV. And don’t forget Untucked afterwards which is ALWAYS where the real story and Tea is spilled. Trust, Hunty! Setting the DVR, faster.

RuPaul's Drag Race V

MAN TO MAN WITH SCOTT CULLENS

Scott Cullens Naked

Drumroll, please… Here’s the interview you’ve been waiting for! I’ve truly heard your desperate cries to find out everything there is to know about reality star and Palm Springs personality, hunkalicious Scott Cullens. I just happen to have direct access to the man himself and in-between shooting his new reality program Grand Designs for A&E, I was able to get him to sit down and reflect on a wonderful life well lived. We know each other well enough to be aware of one another’s sick and twisted mindset and humor which I believe draws us together. I knew Master Cullens’ answers would be fierce. But of all the celebrity interviews I’ve done and there’s blessedly been a few from RuPaul Dolls and soap opera stars, Scott gave me more heart and soul  than I had even imagined him offering.

Scott Cullens Naked

I see Scott on a daily basis at World Gym Palm Springs pumping iron, cutting abs with his trainer Eddie and sweating the house down on our cardio playground. Cullens is religious about his workouts and worships the time he spends at the gym. His body is unbelievable. He is always in his look and I’ve never seen him look bad. From carrying a pink backpack over his bowling ball sized shoulders to overseeing his own company, Palm Pacific Construction, creating masterpieces in beautiful homes across the Valley, Scott Cullens is one of a kind. Unique, complex and a brilliant example of the way gay culture is often revered today, here’s Scott on striving for perfection as a Gym Barbarian, his time with Barbara Walters on The View and what type of man really turns him on.

Steven Michael – Let me start off by saying in my most reassuring Samantha Jones voice to Carrie Bradshaw before she became “runway roadkill” during Margaret Cho’s fashion show in Sex and the City, “You’re a model.” An inside joke, indeed. Can you give us a brief history of where you grew up and what your childhood was like?

Scott Cullens – “The best way for you to visualize my childhood in Kansas and Missouri is to think of Honey Boo Boo but with less class. My parents were in high school when they had me so we grew up together. I remember our airbrushed van – naked ladies with gigantic tits, shag carpeting on the floor, ceiling and walls with a wet bar and moon roof. We entered the van in car shows and I took the trophies to show and tell. I worked very hard pumping gas, mowing lawns, picking up aluminum cans so I could keep up with the kids at school with new Nikes and terry cloth shirts. It wasn’t a dream childhood, but I had parents that loved me.”

SeanBlackModelScottCullens
Wow, Scott. I had no idea you came with such vivid history. I grew up in the Bible Belt and definitely have those stories that would amaze. Were you big and strong as a teenager and when did your aspirations for the ultimate physical brawn come into play with your psyche?

“I did have the brawn as a teenager. I went to high school with Brad Pitt. Yes, he may have become an international mega super celebrity, however, I won ‘Best Body’ in high school. He might have the fame but I have the ‘Best Body’ award. Remind me to dig it out for you from Mom’s basement. I was a swimmer in high school and was well liked by the girls. However, you weren’t allowed to be popular unless you played football or were a cheerleader. Thank God for those girls liking me or I would have been an outcast.”

Ooh, child. I do not miss high school. I was very involved in clubs, band and even a cheerleader but knew there was a life outside of it waiting for me. What do you personally feel is the biggest misconception about you?

“The biggest misconception about me is that it’s easy for me to stay in this shape. There is a fat guy screaming to get out of me. I workout like a fiend every day, hour of cardio, hour and half of weights. I try to watch my diet but I’m drawn to junk food.”

Scott Cullens Underwear

Yes, I love to eat. And can bust up a Little Debbie something-something. What’s your new A&E show Grand Designs going to feature? That’s the title, right? Are you the main focus or are you part of an ensemble? When does it air?

“I would love to give you lots of information about my new television show on A&E but we are only in the 2nd week of filming and I’m contractually unable to discuss the details until we get closer to airing. I can tell you it is a home building and design show that is already popular in other countries. They are following me building a new luxury home in Palm Springs over the next several months from start to finish. I’m very excited and fortunate to be a part of this project. I will of course find it appropriate to take off my shirt at many inappropriate times during filming.”

Well naturally, Gypsy Rose Lee. Your fans would have it no other way. What do you find the most fascinating part of shooting reality TV? And the biggest misconception about filming?

“Reality TV is like porn, a lot of starting and stopping. It is not really flowing like you see it in the finished product. It’s always difficult to remember to repeat the question you are asked by the director in your responses or the viewer has no idea what you are talking about.”

Model Scott Cullens

I have always believed that reality stars are pawns for the editors. Bruce Villanch once said to do and re-do what the directors want in reality television or they’ll fuck you in editing. Which best describes your workout regime? Joan Crawford’s Mommie Dearest intensity or a Navy Seals hardcore beat down? Describe your workouts and do you eat exactly what you should for the perfect physique?

“My workouts are definitely Navy Seal hardcore beat down. To get ready for the camera, I prepare several weeks in advance with a daily routine of 1-2 hours of weight training, 1 hour of medium intensity cardio, and a couple of 1 hour abs-only trainer-guided sessions each week. My diet during prep consists of white fish, lemon, 1/2 cup of vegetables and 1/2 cup rice, water 5 x per day.”

Scott Cullens

That actually sounds good to me right now. The food not the regime. Well, whatever you do works really well. We’re friends naturally on Facebook and I see the comments people leave for you and your breathtaking images, basically paying homage for a job well done. Of course, I must bring you down to earth by witty quips of my humor and I see some of your other confidants do as well. It comes from a place of love. How does it make you feel when you read the comments of admiration? Because I’ll be first to say it, “Bitch you look good.”

“Everyone enjoys the good feeling of a compliment. The best compliment for myself is maintaining my body and health at my age. Yep, I’m 48 in March 2013.”

Just hit the 45-year-young mark myself. How do you deal with haters and do you find they are out there watching you waiting for you to have a bad hair day, so to speak?

“When I did my first television show, I was unprepared for the haters. The blogs and fan mail was 90% nice but the other 10% were not just mean, they were blood-thirsty, venomous, hateful messages. It really got to me for a bit. But then I realized that not a single one of those people know me or have even met me. That much energy put into hate must surely be about something wounded within them and I stopped taking it personally.”

Scott Cullens

Shady people love to hide behind their anonymous keyboards and spew their hatred. Plus, the way one person can read what someone else types can also get things very twisted regardless of the intent. It is really nice when someone surprises you with a compliment. Especially on a day when we’re possibly not loving ourselves. Can you recount your story of being on The View after your episode on Obsessed was first aired? You told me personally about Barbara Walters’ assertive ways backstage and how it all went down. Care to share?

“My interview on The View was a fantastic experience. I was afraid of Elizabeth Hasselbeck because of her conservative stance on everything. However, she called out my name when she saw me before the show and introduced herself. After a while, I realized I may not agree with a single word out of her mouth but she is a nice woman and I respect her. Whoopi was the nicest and gave me a bear hug and whispered in my ear that my bravery on coming out with severe OCD helped a lot of people and she was proud of me. Barbra Walters was asked specifically not to bring up a scene in the show involving a tampon. The producer said it was too much for morning audiences. I was sitting one foot from her as she agreed not to speak about it. Then WHAM! She side swipes me with a question about the tampon scene. I came back with the solid quip, “I understand how scaring the gay guy with a tampon is hilarious, I get it,” and that ended the entire segment.”

“She later tracked me down after the show and asked me a half dozen questions about my relationship and OCD. I called her Barbara and I think she wanted a Ms. Walters. Oooops. Two weeks later I was contacted by the Oprah show and booked for September 11th that year with Whitney Houston. You don’t think I was nervous? Well, a few days later, after I’m sure a thorough Google search involving naked pictures and my Big Muscle profile, I was uninvited. I told ABC and The View about the pictures online and they didn’t care. My story is still interesting and helpful whether you’ve seen my dick online or not. Whatevs.”

palm pacific_logo

Whatevs, indeed. I remember you telling me the story after you had returned from New York and I was wanting to hear it again. Thanks for sharing. I had been in Nashville when it aired and I was packing to return home in the hotel room watching you thinking, Whoa! Speaking of Obsessed, were you happy with how you were portrayed overall? How does it feel seeing yourself on the television?

“When I was first contacted for the show Obsessed, I said, ‘Hell no!’ I carried around these crazy thoughts and behaviors in my head my entire life and I was not going to be ridiculed on national television by discussing them openly. But my therapist said that if I could help one kid that was afflicted like I was, would it be worth it? So I agreed. Overall, I was happy that the show reached millions of people and I received hundreds of emails and messages from people that went to seek help from a professional or the best letters were from teenagers who told their parents they suffered from the same thing that guy on television does. I was trapped in my room at age eight because I had so many rituals I had to perform to get out. It’s torture.”

“The show really focused in on my obsession with germs but that really was a masterful edit because my real affliction is counting and where I walk or don’t walk. What I touch or don’t touch. It’s really an inexplicable affliction but the best way to explain it is there are these strange thoughts that enter an OCD-afflicted person’s head which then causes anxiety. The anxiety seems to be temporarily abated by performing a senseless ritual. I have had many many years of therapy and lead a life that most would not even notice any of my rituals. I work hard to keep the anxiety low and not perform the rituals. Stress makes it worse. Being happy seems to be the best medicine for the affliction.”

Scott, your honestly astounds me. I could really go on more about what you’ve just said but you summed it up brilliantly. Sometimes I find myself getting slightly OCD on a situation but nothing like you described. Thanks for sharing that. I haven’t seen The Adonis Factor but did catch a few clips. Was there any backlash from how open you and many of the subjects were about looking good being a key to happiness, popularity and success?

“I know several of the guys in The Adonis Factor received a lot of backlash after the movie aired. I was as honest as I could be about circuit parties, drug use, steroid use, Botox, and all of the things that are a part of being in the ‘gay scene.’ I think my total honest approach garnered me a lot of fans and support for my role in the movie. I really did not get a single mean or hateful message. They were all very positive.”

What do you do on your time off? How does Scott let his hair down?

“I love to travel when I have the time. I usually book my trips for the entire year ahead of time that way I can force myself to take a work break. I went to Buenos Aires, Puerto Vallarta and Belize last year.”

I love traveling, too. It’s difficult to find time to get away. Would you like to share you story of sobriety and when that began? Is it difficult going to the big circuit events and not partaking in the party favors like many are?

“I have been sober from drugs and alcohol for almost nine years now. I went to the Betty Ford Center after a single moment of clarity one summer day in 2004. I had just lost the last of the money I had at the casino. I was out of drugs and I started brushing my teeth and they just started falling out of my mouth in little pieces. I was unrecognizable in the mirror. I am one of the few people who have been fortunate enough to go to the darkest place broken in a million pieces and find a way to take the best pieces and create the man I had always hoped to be. Each morning and each night I recite, out loud, all the things I am grateful for. The list keeps growing even though I am am content with what God has given me so far. I am truly blessed to be able to say that I am impeccable with my word, respect others, and try to be the best guy I can be every day.”

“I still love to dance and go to the circuit parties. The obsession with drugs and alcohol was lifted and I am not affected by the presence of them at the parties. Many of my friends are partaking at these parties but they are not addicts like me and I am in no seat of judgment. I am just one of the few that are blessed enough that those environments do not entice me to use and I can still go and have more fun than I ever did high.”

Scott Cullens - American Eros

What do you feel is the biggest challenge for today’s gay community and thoughts on how to combat it and survive through it?

“One of the biggest challenges for today’s gay community is drug abuse. The drugs have been there for those of us who could not handle the feelings of ‘less than’ or fear. Crystal Meth seems to be the worst culprit and I would encourage anyone who hasn’t tried it to just know that it is not worth the experience. I have no judgments about drug use, but I do have judgments about drug abuse when it has a negative impact on the individual and our community. I’m grateful I have the frame of reference I do. Sex and parties are so much more fun sober, for me.”

Are you doing now what you had set out to do when you were younger? If not, how have things changed from what you once wanted for yourself?

“I had intentions of being a doctor. I finished pre-medical training and did some externships after college. My life today may not have been exactly what the plan was when I was younger but I can honestly say its better than I had ever hoped.”

MarkHenderson - Model Scott Cullens

If you weren’t living here in Palm Springs, where would you be? If you didn’t have the successful construction business, what would you be doing?

“I cannot understand why everyone in the world doesn’t want to live in California. I’ve lived in San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles and Palm Springs. I could live anywhere as long as it is within the State of California. I used to own several private training gyms in Los Angeles. We had mostly a celebrity clientele like Herb Ritts, Brad Pitt, Rachel Hunter, K.D. Lang and Monica Lewinsky. I’ve changed my career several times in my life and always found success. If you love digging ditches and are passionate about digging ditches, then you will find a lot of success digging ditches. Find a passion and it always turns into success.”

What is you biggest passion?

“My biggest passion currently is building and design. You can go to www.PalmPacificConstruction.com and see my work. I’m very proud of what I do.”

What can people expect from you as a good friend and what do you expect from the people in your close circle?

“I expect loyalty, honesty and money from my friends. They can expect loyalty, honesty and that I’ll spend the money.”

MarkHenderson- Model Scott Cullens

As far as romance goes, what kind of man do you look for? And are you seeing anyone serious right now?

“I am a serial monogamous dater. I like pretty boys and I do not have the best track record as far as tenure but I do not regret any of my relationships. My first boyfriend 20 years ago is still my best friend today. I am currently seeing someone. We have only been dating for a couple months but maybe #14 is my lucky number!”

What do you want your legacy to be?

“I want my legacy to be that I was the most generous person everyone knew, with my time, my ear, my heart or my money.”

What/Who truly inspires you to be greater than you are?

“Anyone who speaks with passion and conviction in spite of public opinion will always get my attention whether I agree or not.”

Any advice for today’s LGBTQ youth?

“For today’s LGBTQ youth I would say to be authentic, dream big and take pride in the fact that you are perfect, whole and complete just the way God made you.”

I personally thanked Scott for joining in the conversation here on my website and he replied saying, “I loved your questions. It took me to a very insightful place last night.” I loved hearing that because I am honest in saying this has been not only one of the best interviews I’ve done here but also one of my all-time favorites! Once I find out more details about Scott’s new reality show, you’ll hear about it here! Thanks to the photographers for their amazing art.

THE SATURDAYS INVADE AMERICA – WORSHIP!

chasing the saturdays

I just watched Chelsea Lately with great anticipation as The Saturdays had their first US television appearance before the premiere of their new reality show Chasing The Saturdays landing on E! January 20. Chelsea gave them the business and even commented on wanting to sit on one of their faces with their purple lipstick as well as digging Mollie most since she’s the only single Sats onboard. They have quite the set up of appearances from Today to Tonight Show with Jay Leno. I’m dying inside but trying to remain cool on the outside. Please! I’m as giddy as a British tween with a short kicky cut like my favorite brunette diva Frankie Sandford! I’m actually feeling quite protective of them like they are this precious gem that only a very few lucky ones know about.

The-Saturdays-What-About-Us-thatgrapejuice

I’m so excited for them, in reality. I’ve loved them and their music for a good few years now and worship everything they have done. I could probably name their entire catalogue if you needed me to. Needless to say I’m looking forward to their reality show even though I have a copy of their UK docu-reality show What Happens On Tour. I have everything they’ve done, musically and video wise. They have rocked gay dance club music for a while now. Thankfully I have friends in high places that have always looked after my ears and eyes. It’s quite surreal to this all unfold on American soil. Living for the remixes to their first US release What About Us. Video, faster…

Long live The Saturdays! I WORSHIP. ♥

ONE FINE FAMILY – THE FARM KINGS

Who are the Farm Kings? I bet you’ve heard about the King family via friends or by passing through on a wave of channel surfing. Meet the Kings, a family who runs Freedom Farms and serves “farm to table” food and vegetables providing the Pittsburgh region the freshest produce possible. And besides being the hardest working family this side of the Kardashians (I chuckle at the comparison!) the King brothers, there’s 9 of them, are more stunning the next. If I could also mention that I truly believe that this TV show should be required watching for today’s youth. It shows what hard work is all about, how family bonds can be stronger than anything and where wholesome and true farming takes place. They really have a deep love for one another.

And like their t-shirts testify…  No Farms – No Food!

Underneath Mamma Bear Lisa, there’s older brother Joe, Tim, Pete, Dan (my personal hero!), Luke, Sam, John (gorgeous heartbreaker at 16!), Paul and Ben. “Bitty” is the only female (2nd oldest child) around other than Lisa with the testosterone running rampant across plains and cornfields from the male brood of the King family. And above all else, the King boys worship their Mamma Bear. The family is truly inspiring and we’re so glad we found the show. We really enjoy it! This is reality TV done right.

And did I mention that the boys are gorgeous?! They are often shirtless, sweaty and wrestling one another in the fields. Their teeth are pearly white, skin is tan and clear, and they’re mostly always in good moods considering the amount of time they spend with one another. That is until a drought or hailstorm has created havoc on all of their hard work which is quite heartbreaking. Set your DVR, catch it live or watch it online. You too will fall in love with the King family. Find their WEBSITE for t-shirts, locations and just to say Hello!

Farm Kings can be found on GAC (Great American Country) channel on Thursdays at 9 p.m. I dare you to try and pick your favorite brother. Dare, I say!

John… Again, you’ll be 18 when?!

INTERVIEWING RICHY SQUIRREL JACKSON

I was able to grab a quick interview with the man himself, Richy Squirrel Jackson, whose new reality television show Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition hitting Lifetime TV October 9 promises to be full of high-kicks and even higher drama. Richy is the man behind the brilliant choreography of Lady Gaga and has worked dancing alongside many a star including the amazing Laurianne Gibson. Richy perches on the judge’s pew with Pussycat Dolls creator Robin Antin and Dance Moms maven Abby Lee Miller for television’s latest dance competition show. We can’t wait to watch the magic unfold.

Anything that has the words reality or Abby Lee Miller in the description can be assumed to be chock full of tears, cheers and jeers. Not everyone agrees with the way that dance floor ringmaster Abby Lee Miller from Dance Moms (on the same network) handles her students and performers. It’s very tough love. Take it or leave it. With the stage comes crazy “stage moms” and in AUDC. I feel certain they will be in brute force wanting their little Mischa or Giselle to leap to the top as quickly as possible. Cross Abby’s tell-it-like-it-is-her-way-or-the-highway temperament and fame hungry young performers driven by their mom and sparks will create fireworks of pure guilty pleasure television. Setting the DVR now!

Here’s what cute and cuddly Richy Squirrel had to say about a taste of recent fame, his new show on Lifetime TV and what we viewers can expect from the surefire reality hit he’s poured his heart and soul into making happen! Because of strict confidentiality clauses and contracts, he’s quite limited in what he can say regarding certain aspects of his professional career. I respect that. I admit that I don’t like it, but I can respect it. We want to know it all! Here’s the talented one telling it like it is in his words…

Steven Michael - Care to share an early career moment that made you the performer you are today?

Richy Squirrel Jackson – “When I first touched down in L.A., I can remember immediately taking dance classes because that was the thing to do. Soon after, I noticed that my personal dance style and approach to choreography began to change and I began to perform like everyone else. So I stopped taking classes and continued to work on myself as a dancer/performer and this led me to feel more confident in what “I” bring to the world of dance as a performer.”

When the spotlight is off, where is Richie and what is he doing? What’s your off-time like and who is around you?

“When the spotlight is off… Richy is definitely checking out a movie, relaxing at home, spending time with friends or doing absolutely nothing. This business is 24/7, so off time is precious and in that sense doing less is so much more for me. Weekends aren’t really weekends and holidays become just another name for a day.”

Do people recognize you on the street and what’s that like for you?

“Yes people recognize me on the streets and for me it’s great! I take pictures, get asked questions about jobs, people dance in front of me or they just shout out “5-6-7-8,” Ha- Ha! It’s always a good time for a minute or two out of my day!”

We were heavily involved with the dance workshop circuit when I was a teen. Did you do the dance competitions when you were younger like Tremaine and Showstopper? Is Abby’s new show like that? What can we expect this first season?

“When I was younger I was in a dance group and I choreographed the local cheerleading team. Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition is more like her own version of competitions that actually take place in the world of competitive dance. It takes a brand new direction from where Dance Moms began with the kids competing individually for the chance at $100,000 as well as a prized scholarship to the Joffrey School of Ballet in NYC. This really creates a competition unlike any other. You’ll see the struggles and triumphs throughout the season as well as what it takes to be the last one standing on the stage… more than you realized!”

After working with Abby on AUDC… How do you feel about her teaching methods that are portrayed on Dance Moms? Do you feel the cameras portray her genuinely and do you agree with her way of handling her girls on TV?

“After working on AUDC I realize that Abby’s teaching methods are good-old-fashion tough love. Dance Moms portrays her just as she is, only it’s hard to understand when you see these young children. Abby’s methods are much like that of a coach of a sports team and though it isn’t the way I may handle situations, the outcome is still great! I respect and have much love for Abby!”

I agree with you on the aspect that Abby wants the most out of her girls. Though it’s not anything that I’m familiar with in my dance training. Are you able to take or teach dance classes with you busy schedule? I live in Palm Springs and unfortunatley there’s limited resources unless you drive to L.A. or take Zumba. I miss it but am choreographing a new artist for Gay Pride and competing for a male entertainer title in March so I do what I can do. What’s you favorite style of dance?

“My schedule has become very busy. I have little time even for myself. I’ve always felt that booking a job, to work for me as a dancer on any of my projects is the best class you can get. You get to learn, you get to dance, and… you get paid!”

Do you find downfalls of doing reality television? Any invasion of privacy issues you deal with? Just curious.

I don’t find any downfalls in doing reality television. I actually really enjoy doing reality TV simply because all you have to be is “you.” There are no scripts or characters to play. It just empowers you to be your true self and to be confident in you who are and what you have to say. Make wise choices.”

What makes you happiest ever?

“I am truly happiest when I’ve completed choreography for a live performance, video, etc. and see that my vision for the piece was well received by not just the artist but those who are attached to the project as well and more importantly, the artists’ fans.”

What can you tell me what I didn’t ask you?

“I love choreographing and being a visionary. I’m so happy and grateful that I have been able to turn my passion into a career. Never ever give up on your dreams!”

I want to send a big hug out to Richy for being part of my domain and taking a few minutes to share his life with us! Loved his answers and amazing wicked talents. Catch Ricky Squirrel Jackson on Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition on Lifetime TV October 9 or catch him on his Twitter or Facebook pages!

And KEEP DANCING!

BACKSTAGE AT SYTYCD SEASON 9 PREMIERE

If you’re a fan of the Fox TV smash So You Think You Can Dance then I bet you’ve always been curious on what happens backstage and in-between commercial breaks. The good stuff that we viewers are rarely privy to, until now…

Here’s the real Tea about the show broken down in chronological order. While I worship some details I’m malnourished on others because perhaps the live performance left me feeling as such. Being a choreographer and dance teacher I don’t always agree with what the judges say but they’ve yet to ask me to sit along with them, so that’s that. The crowd has their favorites, America too! Of course when it’s all said and done the final decision really is down to us, the voting public. Yeah, right. Political correctness, you know!

After receiving my show vouchers from the lottery off the On Camera Audiences Facebook page, I made plans to drive in and catch the show, see BFF Brian and walk on Malibu Beach a bit before heading back to the swelter of Palm Springs. I made an impromptu decision to drive in Tuesday evening after work and wake up with the sound of Pacific Ocean waves crashing through my open windows at Brian’s place in Malibu. Sounded delicious.

Wednesday involved some running around 3rd Street Promenade for a spot of light shopping and lunch on the beach. I rinsed off the saltwater and got dressed for SYTYCD which started at 3:30 p.m. according to the email I had printed out. I had been previously to see the show taped live during the season Benji Schwimmer won when he was dancing with the fabulous Donyella. If you haven’t seen his interview on YouTube about the being gay, the actual reality of the show and being Mormon then you simply must. I knew even though the letter said 3:30 it mean closer to 2:45. The people seriously line up! Plus with this being the premiere episode of the Top 20 it was the must-see show at CBS Studios yesterday.

2:05 p.m. – Leaving Malibu and the R&R I needed more than I realized. Traffic was fierce for my jaunt up Sunset Blvd. as I headed back into L.A. Gave I-10 the ig due to its unpredictability.

2:55 p.m. – I find myself turning left on Beverly in front of the Genesse gate where my fellow fans wait in the sunshine that was beating down like the spotlight on their favorites inside. The line looked about 250+ deep.

3:05 p.m. – After whipping my car into a parking spot inside The Grove I boot-scoot-boogied my way up Fairfax and then down Beverly to the growing line of audience. The first thoughts of the improbability of me actually getting inside reared their head. I strutted past the long line and found my place at the end trying to figure the best method for a branch of tree shade. I already knew my shaved skull was being braised by the rays of sun. And I was schvitzing considerably from the brisk stroll from the car and scorching summer heat.

3:12 p.m. – Sydney, a rep from FOX, has 2 tickets to go inside VIP for anyone with the knowledge and a voice to answer the question, ‘Who was last week’s guest judge?”

3:13 p.m. – I shout out the first female name that comes to mind Debbie Allen since she was on during the auditions she was my immediate thought. Plus, the heat was making me desperate for an actual ticket. Sydney told me know and asked again focusing on the group of quiet girls in front of me.

3:13 1/2 p.m. – “Zooey DeChannel” I shouted out after thinking it quickly through in my head. Since I was alone she gave the other ticket to one of the girls and I headed inside the grocery store to cool off and grab water. I now had a few minutes before meeting Sydney at Gate C.

3:15 p.m. – Found myself untucking my shirt, wiping out sweat from areas and perching in the freezer section to chill out around the corner at the market. Wasted time roaming the store realizing my husband would have loved that.

4:00 p.m. – Headed through the security gates backstage. Left phone in the car since they collect them upon entrance. We were ushered in soon after past a huge group of people sitting and watching us.

4:15 p.m. – Settled in seat and meeting the couple next to me. Tom and some lady. I sort of felt he was hitting on me but I tend to be narcissistic like that. Please excuse. The next moments consisted of various production people running about, groups of girls squished into small spaces on the sides of the stage and I was thankful again that I had a seat ticket. Plus the woman that got my other ticket told me once she sat and we started dishing that they cut the line right before the place we were standing. I was lucky to be inside.

4:50 p.m. – Judges to the table . Screams and shouts ensue. A comic relief keeps the crowd going with Boyfriend and One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful music causing squeals and eye-rolls from yours truly. An obvious group of production assistants were positioned around us. The one beside us was reading Entertainment Weekly and writing every single thing down that happened on stage from what was said to routines and music. I assumed he was a blogger for the show. They were all on their iPhones and Blackberry devices.

4:55 p.m. – I made the final decision that the dress code listed in the email must have been a typo since everything I saw that was banned was sitting next to me. High-heels, blue jeans and shorts. I looked good that’s all I knew.

5:00 p.m. – A wonderful pre-taped group performance opens the show. Cat Deely gets positioned in death-defying stilettos and a creme minidress. She is stunning and quirky and approachable. That’s why she works as host. During the show between commercial breaks she will nibble on Red Vines and continually worry about her teeth.

5:05 p.m. – The first pan of the audience I see me standing arms in the air clapping. I continue to look for myself.

5:06 p.m. – Dancers enter solo and the crowd is so loud you couldn’t hear Cat say their names. Legs are to there and performers spin like tops.

5:08 p.m. – Nigel begs for America to vote for favorites and shocks with the announcement of four eliminations next week. 2 boys and 2 girls.

5:09 p.m. – Love “firecracker” Whitney who starts off the night of erratic 9 second bios. Chehon needs some hip-shaking help while Louis Van Amstel encourages masculinity. Whitney’s fringe piece is fabulous as she luckily dances her style. She is on the Hot Tamale Train right out of the gate. Love the number overall. My husband comments why the west coast can’t vote.

5:15 p.m. – Chelon’s number comes up and it says GO-HIM which I found slightly religious. Well, it is Fox TV.

5:21 p.m. – Sonya Tayeh choreographs.  Amazing twist up to his side. Mary is breathless and worships about the dancers’ surrendering. George has an amazing ass and danced phenomenally with Tiffany. Great routine. Kenny Ortega continues the worship of Sonya and relives memories.

5:33 p.m. – NappyTabs choreograph. Tabitha was glowing. She looked amazing dressed in red. Routine theme: alcoholism. Didn’t like this one. Sorry to say. I’m weird about these story hip-hop performances. He is sexy but she was too soft. Yawn. Moving on.

5:37 p.m. – The girl next to me asks if Nigel and Mary dated because he is always making comments about his liking of her. I replied, “I really don’ t think so.”

5:38 p.m. – Group standing on the right side is instructed to move out of the way while scaffolding is moved onstage by a forklift while the commercials are happening.

5:44 p.m. – Alexa and cutie Aussie Daniel begin a boring jazz routine dressed in red. The scaffolding fills up time. I like her blown out. I feel she’ll be going home first. Sadly, they have no chemistry.

5:54 p.m. – Amber is fierce in blonde hair and turns out a Viennese Waltz with Nick who picks his genre ballroom. Love the version of Nights In White Satin by Tina Arena they do. I loved this number! Pan to Dance Moms leader Abby Lee Miller.

6:05 p.m. – Frontrunner Amelia  dances with goofy Will in a NappyTabs “Character-Pop.” LOVED THIS! The Lovecats by The Cure provided the perfect soundtrack. They were really entertaining.

6:15 p.m. – We are seeing Janelle being stretched beyond belief by Dareian who is a little hottie during an African Jazz piece. This was really HOT! Their energy was incredible!

6:26 p.m. – Announcement about Dizzy Feet National Dance Day. Looks fun!

6:28 p.m. – Eliana dances with Cyrus who I just knew would be getting something like this Tyce Diorio Broadway number from Hairspray something as nontraditionally easy to keep him around a few weeks because let’s face it, he will be eaten up in harder choreography. He did a commendable job and she was good, too. I’m weird about Broadway numbers. The crowd loves Cyrus.

6:32 p.m. – I see me behind Tyce acting really crazy. (I’m to his upper left.) I rise up out of my seat and make sure I’m seen. I loved it. Shameless.

6:39 p.m. – Travis Wall shines with Ryan Gossling-looking Matthew and Audrey in this Titanic inspired production. This was wonderful! Travis Wall never disappoints. Am looking forward to his new reality show on Oxygen at the finale of the month called All The Right Moves. Standing ovation by judges. Rightfully so. The pairing was fierce. The leap was awesome of the chaise lounge although she almost lost her footing going up.

6:49 p.m. – Lindsay turns the paso doble with Cole. His body is rocking! Best routine of the night, perhaps?! IT WAS FIERCE! Powerful and strong. Could enjoy watching it over and over. Standing ovation! Deservedly.

And what actually happened backstage? I’m guessing dance belts were cutting off the circulation of the males and the females were primping in the mirror and over- stretching past points of comprehension. Nerves got to some while others looked at it as a breeze. Each person backstage would have a different version of the reality. And like them, this has been mine.

THE ROYALITY OF LATRICE ROYALE

When I first met Latrice Royale in Ft. Lauderdale many moons ago I knew she was destined for great things. Our circle of friends intertwined during my living adventures in South Florida mid-90s and we casually hung out a few times before I moved away to L.A. She has always been outspoken and larger than life but I believe it was appearing on season 4 of RuPaul’s Drag Race that gave her a true voice that resonated with not only the gay community but legions of fans that tuned in every week to see the Royale Way. No matter straight, queer, young or golden, Latrice Royale has touched more lives than she’ll be able to realize and ever know. She is the 1 in one in a million.

Every week on RuPaul’s Drag Race it seemed to be Mamma Latrice who would steer the dramarama elsewhere and either support fellow(ette) contestants or set their asses straight for giving others the business. “Oh, the shade. The shade of it all!” We sat and witnessed challenge after challenge dominated by the Madame Royale while others struggled and sashay’d their way back home. When she was eliminated during the round of “lip-sync for your life” against front-runner Chad Michaels I felt virtual daggers nail my heart. I believe America cried with Royale as she stood and thanked RuPaul for “changing her life forever.” I’ve watched every episode of RDR and have never seen a queen pour out such emotion in appreciation for being on the show as Latrice “M*ther F*cking” Royale had.

I have many a confidant in the drag circuit and this round was the first of the previous where the winner and top spots stayed silent among the mouths who spout along the Internet. In past seasons the winner was either revealed online beforehand by the anxious or silly enough was told in confidence by the winner herself and exposed for breach of contract, so I hear. Oh, yes… allegedly. Again, the shade of it all! The girls on RDR are in a tight contract that prevents them from telling the Tea or sharing the results and goings-on while filming and immediately afterwards. I respect that and can honor them by not prying or sticking my blogger-nose where it doesn’t belong. But I do love when I’m aware of the true grease. Just because I don’t share it here doesn’t mean I don’t know. No Tea – No Shade.

My celebrity interview with the ever-popular Royale proves just how in demand these Dolls from the show can be in. The exposure for these privileged entertainers is priceless and prosperous. This interview with Latrice has been over a month in the making. If you follow her on Facebook or Twitter then you know she is one busy gal-on-the-go and I respect that, truly. I know that when life is turned upside down for these girls after the immediate success from being on the show they are being pulled in many directions. I’m part envious and at the same time thrilled that it’s happening to them because the opportunities are endless and life-changing.

Latrice has been one of the most popular stars of the series. With that comes not only the rise in exposure on the traveling drag performance circuit but also responsibility to become more than she was before the show by giving back. Few do this to heart while Latrice has shown many the way by doing something special charity wise in the cities she works in. Of all the entertainers I’ve known and loved before I must admit that Latrice Royale is true drag royalty. I’m thrilled she had time to share what she is able to and has done so here, and that RuPaul has given her such the platform to let people learn how special and inspirational queens can be when given the chance.

Steven Michael – You made it to the final 4. Amazing, Mamma! It seemed that during your final UnTucked that you were almost predicting you were going home by saying a few optimistic goodbyes. Did you feel that way while they were doing their judging that it could be your time to depart? Can you share the feelings you were experiencing during those last few minutes on the show?

Latrice Royale – “I actually did feel it was my time to go… After Phi Phi didn’t win the challenge, I knew what was about to go down. I was okay with it. I had exceeded my goal, broke boundaries, set new standards and made Drag Race Herstory!! It was very emotional for me, just coming to the realization of all that I had achieved.”

You were a strong contender from the beginning. Everyone seemed to evolve and grow through the season. What was the hardest challenge while filming the show? Some of them were crazy…

“I’d say that The Snatch Game was without a doubt the most difficult time I had while filming. I was trying to hold myself from poppin’ completely off on that front row. LOL.”

Yes, those girls were being very immature and amateurish. The camera caught your angst and disgust. Thanks from the audience for reading them backstage about it afterwards. What are you feeling right now about you soaring popularity? How is it possible to handle in real-time? Everything has happened rather fast!

“This whole new life has completely surpassed any and all expectations that I had in my mind. I really and truly just wanted to share my story in hopes that it might inspire and motivate people. I had NO clue the effect that I would have on so many peoples lives.”

First we were thrilled to see you cast and then the way you opened your heart and soul to the cameras impressed everyone in my circle here in Palm Springs. The show is our around-the-espresso-machine talk topic at work. Can’t wait to see you on Drag U. Do you enjoy the traveling aspect of this or would you rather be staying close to home, so to speak? And those baggage fees! ACK!

“LOL!!! NO, no! I love it!!! This has been my dream to travel the world! I am so glad I’m touring my great country first before traveling abroad. I definitely am looking forward to traveling to lands far and distant.”

I admit that I love traveling, too! It is a production but I’ve done it enough to know how to make the most out of it. Tell us the biggest misconceptions about the following:

RuPaul’s Drag Race:

“People seem to think that it’s easier than what it actually is. It looks effortless on TV, however, there is so much more than meets the eye.”

Latrice Royale:

“Well, before the show, people thought that I was yet another ‘FAT, SLOPPY, NON-TALENTED’ QUEEN! During the meet the queens pre-show days, the kids were letting me have it. Based on my video, I could understand that you may have not gotten the true essence of who I am and what I’m all about. This is why I wasn’t really bothered by it, cause I knew the ‘Haters’ would have to turn around and EAT IT!!!”

Trust, Mamma! Tell it. Biggest misconception about doing drag as a living:

“That it’s all glitter and rhinestones!!! LOL. No, baby! It is a job that you must invest in or you will NOT go far. And by invest I mean emotionally, physically, mentally and most of all FINANCIALLY!!”

Your fellow LadyBoy contestants …

“That we actually really and truly love and care about one another. Some girls took their character to the extreme. However, Phi Phi is a sweetheart and so much fun to be around. LOL.”

Precisely. It makes for great television! Who is/are your inspiration(s) and who started you in all of this in the beginning of your career?

“My biggest influence in my drag career has been Tiffany Arieagus. My first drag show was at the Copa Ft. Lauderdale in her weekly Drag Wars contest.”

That’s when we first met. You were just starting out. It’s been fun to live this vicariously through you and I know others would admit to that, too! We just love you! What would you tell up and coming little Latrices who want to grow up and be just like you?

“Pride yourself on being the best person you can be. Don’t get caught up in the shady aspects of drag. Know who you are as a person and accept everything there is about you: Good, Bad, Indifferent!”

What do you think it was about your audition tape that the producers and RuPaul saw that made them cast Latrice Royale and want you in season 4?

“My tape was completely stripped down. Not over produced and super edited. It was me raw and to the point. Funny and witty, cause that is just a part of who I am, and I think they loved it.”

Well, Miss Congeniality. They weren’t the only ones! Your Royale Court is a’plenty and a proud strong faithful bunch. Hope they are scooping up those fabulous t-shirts and bling on your website LatriceRoyale.com! I worship the rhinestone crown pendants on the chain. Just saying. Any last thoughts you’d like to share with your fans and followers?

“I’ve lived a very interesting life. I come from a very humble background, and I have some life experiences that I am not very proud of. However, be that it may, I wouldn’t trade them in for all the money in the world. God only puts on you as much as you can bare and my mother instilled strength and perseverance in me. No regrets! All this would not have been possible if I didn’t have my testimony of life. Dreams really do come true!”

You are really living the dreams of gay-boy-wanna-be-showgirls and many of your peers in the community. What’s in store for Latrice “M*ther F*cking” Royale? Immediate plans for the future? Sex Change? Beginning your transition into female? Anything you can share?

“Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!! Are you kiddin’ me?? Child, please!!! I love that I’m all MAN! I am definitely working on other projects so this not the last you will hear of Latrice. Just stay tuned!”

I’m thrilled the way the interview turned out and thankful to Latrice for taking precious moments from her hectic schedule to share even more of herself so selflessly. Catch Latrice Royale on Drag U starting June 18 with sisters Raven, Alexis Mateo, Raja, Manila Luzon, Willam, Mariah, Shannel and Pandora Boxx just to name a few of the professors teaching the rules of drag queendom to hopeless women.

THE LIFE OF TODDLERS IN TIARAS

“Honey Boo Boo Child…!” “Sparkle, Baby!” “Luxuriate.”

All I can really say when watching TLCs guilty pleasure Toddlers and Tiaras is “Wow” and “Oh, my god.” Seriously. I find myself sitting in awe watching the television while anxious delusional mothers fill their children with caffeine before parading (or dragging) them around to live a life they never did or were able to. And here we sit watching every jaw-dropping episode. Shame on the parents? Perhaps shame on us. Nonetheless, it’s usually the first choice when scrolling through the list of DVR recordings. It is my guilty pleasure. You watch the Kardashians so don’t judge me.

The bottom line is very few of the featured toddlers have any chance of making it out past the pageant world that their parents (usually by the full force of the mothers) have placed them in. Fathers seem to stay clear for the most part. It also seems very few of the toddlers really enjoy doing it when it comes right down to it. So I guess it’s actually the moms that really enter the pageant. Because as you see in most of the shows it’s the spastic mother perched behind the judges doing the routine for the audience while facing their daughter who is on stage gazing out at her with deer-caught-in-headlight eyes and cluelessness that must be seen to believe.

Now, there are a handful of ones that the TLC show features who are fierce competitors for their age. But with that usually comes diva attitudes and alter egos that are truly encouraged by the moms which only build the infrastructure of the hell on heels these toddlers will grow into. Just saying. With millennium names like Mackenzie, Alaska and the breakout toddler now-retired at six forever Ultimate Grand Supreme Eden Wood who has her own show on Logo TV, these children are equally the non-traditional unrealistic youth their airbrushed glamour shots portray.

Of course, many viewers with critiques scream that it’s child abuse as the cameramen film the screaming babies and children not wanting to practice. And what about us who watch from our homes? Here’s what I think. I believe that babies are way too young to be in competition. If their child is unable to walk out alone on stage then she is too young and can’t make the decision for herself if she really wants to be there. If the child does’t want to be in pageants, they shouldn’t be. And, the mothers should be sitting down in their seat because the little one on stage needs to learn how to make it on their own because title holders are leaders not followers. Pageants can build self-esteem but at what cost? Creating living dolls dressed in the hooker outfit from Pretty Woman, not so much.

Personally I’m not a huge fan of what the girls call “the soda that tastes like candy” which of course is Red Bull. That seems like a favorite of the “kiddy crack” the parents pour into their children along with Pixie Stix, sugar packs, Mountain Dew and who knows what else. And with every rush comes the sugar crash afterwards which usually happens during crowning. However, those crowns are lovely! But does that compare to the tables of toys that are offered at the pageants for bribery gifts and blackmail encouragements for the contestants for jobs well done? Hmm. It all makes one ponder.

Unfortunately it seems that most of the families have nothing to their name other than the sparkly homage of crowns won and banners draped in one room of the house. When the cameras catch footage of in-home rehearsals the interiors are of wall panelling and are quite bare in need of attention from the financial flow that heads toward pricey pageant dresses thick with ruffles and bling, ratted-out hair bigger than Texas, manicured nails, travel, coaches, spray tans and fake teeth called “flippers.” I actually don’t mind flippers for what is known as “glitz” pageants because let’s face it that children lose teeth and they don’t always grow in perfectly. But taste levels need to be addressed. Glamour is key while gaudy horse teeth on a child is not.

And what about the Ultimate Grand Supreme Eden Wood and her quest for stardom outside the comfortable pageant world she once dominated while tearing through Manhattan with crazy stage mom in tow? Well, I haven’t watched one episode because I just can’t be and am not bothered. I try to not get caught up in the exploitation but here I am typing and sharing opinions about children. No Tea – No Shade. I really mean no harm, just concern for the sake of impressionable children.

But the previews that Logo TV cram down viewer’s throats show a struggling Eden as she auditions for people seeing past the glossy, animated 11×14 promos of painted adolescents that worked in the pageant arena. Perhaps it’s these eerie, possessed and unreal but necessary portraits, that add to the delusion the greatest. Someone must be quite the artist when airbrushing the humanity out of these little girl’s faces turning them into the image of a painted made-up  adult.

It is all quite twisted and here I am blogging over 950 words about it. Toddlers and Tiaras is outrageous and addictive. While some mother’s have their child adjusted by a chiropractor at age four others are proudly known as “the Tanning Lady allowing their five-year-old to go along and fake-and-bake in a tanning bed, too. And I continue to watch in admitted awe and verbally judge right along with the small-town adjudicators that have the main say in who bumps for a higher title and who only gets the dreaded divisional queen. That’s right, I watch the show. I know the way it works.
